Will Jason Sudeikis break out into films?

So Bobby's had a few small, supporting roles. Most SNL players are thinking about movies, but also most SNL players that graduate from SNL either fall into obscurity or they fall into supporting roles in films. That's currently where Bill, Andy, Bobby, Jason, and Kristen are at. But Kristen and Jason have chances coming up to star in films, and we're hoping Bobby will get a chance in the next few years as well.

The last breakout SNL star was Amy Poehler, and she went on to a TV show. She hasn't been successful in films yet, but she costarred in Baby Mamma, and her show will give her more opportunities.

Andy had an opportunity with Hot Rod in 2007, but that didn't do so well. And then Will Forte has had shots with Brothers Solomon and MacGruber. Those didn't do very well either.

Now it's Jason Sudeikis' turn for a shot with Hall Pass.

Release Date: 25 February 2011
Genre: Comedy
Cast: Alyssa Milano, Owen Wilson, Christina Applegate, Richard Jenkins, Vanessa Angel
Director: Bobby Farrelly, Peter Farrelly
Writer: Pete Jones, Peter Farrelly
MPAA: R
Studio: Warner Bros. Pictures

Plot:
A married man is granted the opportunity to have an affair by his wife. Joined in the fun by his best pal, things get a little out of control when both wives start engaging in extramarital activities as well.

Will Jason Sudeikis break out into films? I think he's got a really good shot here with Owen Wilson backing him up.

Enjoy!

Bobby Moynihan rated #3 in the Robert De Niro SNL episode

3. Bobby Moynihan (Last Week: 1)
Moynihan was the only cast member who can still be described as relatively new who had any sort of presence on Saturday night’s episode — which is a very good sign for Moynihan. Sure, he had one of the best sketches of the night as a Robert De Niro-hating Meet the Parents fan, but his recurring role as Vinny Vedecci’s son gets me every time.

TV Guide calls Bobby Moynihan "hysterical"

Andy Samberg scored with "I Just Had Sex," a "D--- in a Box"-worthy rap with fellow Lonely Islander Jorma Taccone (not to mention Akon, Blake Lively and Jessica Alba), while musical guests Eminem and Lil Wayne tore down the house. And "Weekend Update" concluded with three not-so-wise men — Gov. David Patterson (Armisen), breakout club kid Stefon (the brilliant Bill Hader) and Snooki (a hysterical Bobby Moynihan) — to rival the classic SNL trio of Tarzan, Tonto and Frankenstein.

Bobby Moynihan is Comeback Player of the Year

Comeback Player of the Year: Bobby Moynihan

Moynihan did not have a great 2009-2010 season. Honestly, considering the small amount of airtime he received last season, I really didn’t expect him to be back. I mean, yes, I was rooting for him, but even what looked like what was becoming his signature character (Mark Payne) never made an appearance last season. This season is a different story. Still missing a signature recurring character (we all love Ass Dan, but it’s not really his sketch), Moynihan has nevertheless broken though this year from “guy who may or may not get to stand in the background during a sketch,” to a legitimate talent that will be a driving force on the show for years to come. Look through the great sketches this season — “Fockers Fan,” “A Message from the TSA,” “Kickspit,” “Black Friday” — Moynihan is everywhere. And, honestly, it couldn’t happen to a nicer guy...

Bobby Moynihan to perform at the MTV New Years Bash

Friday, 12/31/10
MTV, 8:30 PM

MTV’s New Year’s Bash will ring in the new year on December 31 with what is meant to be a hilarious look at stuff that happened in 2010.

It'll be a Jersey kind of night around MTV.
We've got hot-as-a-pistol Snooki from MTV's "Jersey Shore" dropping the ball from Times Square, ushering in 2011. The petite reality TV star, complete with her signature hair bump, will be working the "New Years Bash" (starting 10:30 p.m. Friday, MTV), along with a bevy of comedians and hot musical acts and participating in the channel's own ball drop as midnight approaches.

...

The rest of the proceedings will go to host Whitney Cummings, best known for her acid tongue on those Comedy Central roasts... Her guests include "Saturday Night Live's" Bobby Moynihan.

Read more about the event:

============================

A small but hilarious detail from the upcoming "MTV New Year's Bash" has come out. Snooki will not only be dropped inside a giant ball but also appear in a sketch featuring Bobby Moynihan as the other guidette. A comedic turn will see Moynihan dressed like Snooki, complete with the pouf and the heavy eyeliner.

Not overly funny, but it's appropriate in a Christmas episode, I suppose.

Bobby Moynihan is A$$ Dan on SNL!

Commercial - Crunkmas Karnival!

Bobby Moynihan ... Ass Dan
Nasim Pedrad ... Lil Blaster
Jay Pharoah ... MC George Castanza
Jason Sudeikis ... DJ Super Soak

Underground Holiday Event

If there’s one holiday part you need to attend, it’s this one.

This is Bobby's second appearance as A$$ Dan. He also appeared in the first two versions of this skit in pictures and mentions by the hosts of these commercials, Lil Blaster and DJ Super Soaker.

Bobby Moynihan is Snooki (Christmas Song on Weekend Update)

Weekend Update: Paterson, Stefan, Snooki Song

Some of Weekend Updates closest friends stop by to sing a Christmas song!

Fred Armisen ... David Paterson
Bill Hader ... Stefon
Bobby Moynihan ... Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi

Hahahaha! Okay, so this is a throwback to old SNL, where they used to do Frankenstein (Phil Hartman), Tarzan (Kevin Nealon), and Tonto (Jon Lovitz) singing Christmas and other songs like this. (The gag there was that you couldn't understand what the three were singing.) So this is a nice throwback to that, and all three of these characters got to toss out a joke or two. Not amazing, but still amusing!

This was Bobby's fifth appearance as Snooki in only two seasons!

Enjoy!

Bobby Moynihan rated #1 in the Anne Hathaway episode

1. Bobby Moynihan (Last Week: 12)
I don’t know what it is (well, maybe I do), but Moynihan brings his “A” game when Hathaway is around (remember their dance-off sketch in 2008?). Moynihan was front and center in the two best sketches of the night: “Black Friday” and “Message from TSA,” not to mention his take on Guy Fieri for “Weekend Update.”

See how the rest of the cast stacks up here:
http://www.movieline.com/2010/11/who-scored-big-in-week-seven-of-snls-not-ready-for-prime-time-player-relevancy-poll.php

====================

I think Bobby had some great skits, but two commercials and a good (but not his best) Weekend Update impression probably got him #1 mostly because the other players didn't really step up that week.

Eater's Review of Bobby Moynihan's Guy Fieri impression

Here's Bobby Moynihan doing his great Guy Fieri impression on "Weekend Update" from [November's] Saturday Night Live. Sample quote: "Now I, for one, go bezerkey for turkey, but gobble gobble, let's make it full throbble." (Fieri was also lampooned last year on SNL.)

...Fieri shares some of his boozy Thanksgiving dishes, including the turduckenrabpigcowcowhorsishgamehen, which is a "chicken inside of a duck inside of a turkey inside of a rabbit inside of a pig inside of a baby cow inside of a big cow inside of a horse all stuffed into a Cornish game hen." And then deep-fried in Jägermeister?

SlashFood Review of Bobby Moynihan's Guy Fieri

When Bobby Moynihan does Guy Fieri on "Saturday Night Live," it's always over the top, and in this week's sketch he pulled off what everyone who's ever heard of the turducken has joked about for years -- he added six more animals.

He builds a turkduckenrabpigcowcowhorsishgamehen, and then deep-frys it.

Eater rounded up an SNL gallery of the best food skits, from Tina Fey's "Brownie Husband" to Kristen Wiig as Paula Deen eating whole sticks of butter. Check out the clips in between rolling out your Thanksgiving pie crusts; they'll have you rolling on the kitchen floor.

Vanessa Bayer ... Pamela Shimpley
Abby Elliott ... Jenna Lynn Ofstren
Bill Hader ... Leonard
Bobby Moynihan ... Mr. Shimpley
Nasim Pedrad ... Stacy Englands
Kristen Wiig ... announcer (voice)

Dr. Linda Marie Choice is out, so producer Roger Brush is filling in and answering questions.

Roger Brush returns for the fourth time (twice last season and twice this season). He's a little painful to watch, which I guess isn't necessarily a bad thing. Every time he's messing up a new show...

11.21.2009 - Woman To Woman
04.17.2010 - Teen Talk
09.25.2010 - Maternity Matters
12.11.2010 - Sexually Speaking

This is Bobby's first time in a Roger Brush skit.

Bobby was only in two skits this week, and both were small, supporting roles. Maybe we'll see him lead one next week!

11.15.2008
12.19.2009
03.06.2010
12.11.2010

Bobby Moynihan was in the last one as well (from March), playing Ronnie Vogelcheck at the Vogelcheck Family Reunion (Zach Galifianakis hosted). I think Jenny Slate (I miss her) was the odd duck as Shelley.

(This is also Nasim's second Vogelchecks skit, and she also played two different people... Grandma Vogelcheck in the second Vogelcheck skit and now Great Aunt Elena Vogelcheck from Romania.)

Good Bobby Moynihan SNL Review - Robert De Niro gets some help

This image is from the Bobby Moynihan Keith skit:

Robert De Niro 's hosting stint on "Saturday Night Live" on Dec. 4 is an inconsistent blend of meta humor and just plain odd moments, but with a little help from his "Little Fockers" co-star Ben Stiller, pulls together some funny, but not really hilarious moments.

...

"Little Fockers Set Visit"

Little Keith (Bobby Moynihan) can't believe he's on the "Little Fockers" set (wow!) and ate from craft services (wow!) and looked through the camera viewfinder (wow!). But when De Niro (playing himself yet again) arrives, Keith could care less. In fact, he's kind of antagonistic. When De Niro tells him that the makeup guy's job is to make him look good, Keith's response is "Where was he when you made 'Analyze That'?" Ouch. A surprise guest appearance by Ben Stiller brings the skit home.

SNL Review - De Niro plays himself

De Niro in the Blizzard Man sketch:

Here is an excerpt from this review that mentions the Bobby Moynihan Keit sketch...

De Niro is a brand in his movies, who seems currently to be in coasting mode, so nobody feels like asking more of him for live TV either. So he sits there frustrated in yet another edition of "What Up with That" playing himself, and visits another talk show ain the episode as well, sitting for Italian TV with Vinny Vedecci. De Niro plays himself in a third sketch when Bobby Moynihan's little kid comes on the set of a "Fokkers" movie and is impressed with everyone but De Niro.

Bobby Moynihan in Thanksgivies (SNL)

Awards are given out for common Thanksgiving dinner forgettable moments.

This was played in the last episode's Thanksgiving episode during the dress rehearsal. It obviously didn't make the show. Bobby gets the lifetime achievement award at the end. Honestly, I think the funniest part of this clip are Bobby's photos with his facial expressions before he comes up on stage.

Bobby Moynihan as Guy Fieri on Weekend Update (SNL)

Guy Fieri stops by to share some alcohol-infused dishes for Thanksgiving.

Bobby revisits one of his best impressions. Food gags are the best! One line flubb and he doesn't bite the meat at the end, but still pretty funny and memorable. Great job, Bobby!

This is his third appearance as Guy Fieri, but it's the first time he's "led" a skit with it.

Jason Sudeikis ... Robert Osborne

There was almost a fifth character in The Wizard of Oz that you've never heard about.

Anne really does well in picking skits. Last time she was on, she was Mary Poppins, and this time she's Dorothy. Classic! Bobby is perfect for the wizard! I wonder if he's writing this skit and the Disney ones.

Bobby Moynihan is Mohawk in Millionaire Matchmaker (SNL)

Patti has her hands full with Candice, a not-so-attractive lawyer, but takes on the challenge to find her love.

Bobby rocks the mohawk!

Oh my gawsh! No way! Do you guys see it??? This is Vanessa Bayer's way of getting back (by poking fun at herself and acknowledging what happened).

You see, Vanessa had her old online Dating video leaked a few weeks back, and it makes her look a little boring...

So... this skit starts out with a similar video and heads to the next step. Coincidence, or Vanessa "fighting back?"

Other bits that connect... She basically received a lot of hateful comments, including talking about her frizzy hair, so for this character she made the frizzy hair a lot more extreme. And then people asked who the heck would go for her from that video... and the answer in this skit is Taran's version of the same annoying and boring person (but in guy form).

Bobby Moynihan is Snooki in '16 and Pregnant' MTV spinoffs (SNL)

MTV, the network that brought you '16 and Pregnant', has a new maternity-inspired lineup of shows.

Bobby Moynihan is Sam Kinison on Back to the Future Anniversary DVD (SNL)

Commercial - Back To The Future 25th Anniversary DVD

Jon Hamm ... Robin Williams
Paul Brittain ... director (voice)
Bill Hader ... Al Pacino
Steve Higgins ... announcer (voice)
Bobby Moynihan ... Sam Kinison
Jay Pharoah ... Eddie Murphy
Kristen Wiig ... Jennifer Tilly

Okay so the video clip isn't available by itself, but you can watch it in the full episode at 18 minutes:

Honestly, I think Bobby was the weakest link. He did a good job, but it just wasn't as funny and impressive in the context of seeing all these other amazing impressions. I would have preferred to see him do Nathan Lane and do a gay song.

This is the first time SNL has done a Sam Kinison impression.

As far as these impressions go, Jon Hamm takes the cake. Here's how I'd rank them...

1. Jon Hamm ... Robin Williams
2. Jay Pharoah ... Eddie Murphy
3. Kristen Wiig ... Jennifer Tilly
4. Bill Hader ... Al Pacino
5. Bobby Moynihan ... Sam Kinison

Don't get me wrong, Bill also did great. But you've got to do more than nail the voice and mannerisms. You've got to make the performance funny, and Jon and Jay did that the best. And Kristen was amazing and hilarious (but it was only one joke, really).

Roles in 'Superbad' and 'Zombieland' have nerds gravitating towards Emma.

Bobby Moynihan on the Miley Cyrus Show (SNL)

Show - The Miley Cyrus Show

Bryan Cranston ... Billy Ray Cyrus
Vanessa Bayer ... Miley Cyrus
Paul Brittain ... Johnny Depp
Bobby Moynihan ... drummer
Andy Samberg ... actor

On the first episode of Miley's new show, Johnny Depp drops by.

So we get to see here why Vanessa Bayer got picked up for the show.

Honestly, I think Bobby's just there to give some more familiarity since both Vanessa and Paul are new. If it wasn't for Bobby and Andy, you wouldn't even know this was SNL. Of course, Bobby's up for anything, even if it's just a smiling role in the background.

Not impressed with Paul's Depp, even though he actually did a decent job.

I'm curious to see what else Vanessa has up her sleeves. I wonder if she has any interesting characters.

Will Bobby Moynihan be on Larry King Live?

Larry King has an incredible line-up this week.

Barbara Walters will appear tonight in what CNN is billing as her “final interview” for Larry King Live.

Last night he had on Jimmy Carter and tomorrow night will be Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Jerry Seinfeld is on tomorrow night and promises to reveal “one of Hollywood’s best kept secrets.”

The cast of SNL and Lorne Michaels will be the final guests.

This week is the first week in a long time that it’s worth tuning in to watch Larry King Live!

Is Bobby Moynihan finally going to be a full-time cast member on SNL?

Bobby has been featured for two seasons on SNL now. Sure, he hasn't stolen the show as well as Andy, Bill, and Kristen did in their first season (they were all promoted after only one season), but Bobby has proven himself with great characters and amazing impressions! Plus he's pretty funny when he's playing himself. Here's a comment from Kate:

Bobby must say goodbye to Jenny Slate

Jenny Slate didn't prove her value to the show, and according to this article, she's out.

We'll miss her funny commercials, but really? That's it? Bobby, Nasim, and Abby have been busting out the impressions and characters and Jenny just wasn't keeping up and staying competitive. Yes, it is a competion; because they're only showing so many skits, so the players need killer material to get their air time, because the writers are going to concentrate on the known elements and bits that they know the players can do. Here's the article...

========================

Jenny Slate, who recently completed her first season at “Saturday Night Live,” will not be returning to the show.

“Saturday Night Live” has finalized its cast for the coming 36th season of the NBC late-night sketch series, hiring four new featured players while dropping a performer who was added to its ensemble last year. The information was provided by a person with firsthand knowledge of planning at “Saturday Night Live” but who was not given permission by NBC to speak on the matter.

Jenny Slate, who finished her freshman year at “Saturday Night Live” in the spring, will not have her contract picked up for a second season, the source said. Ms. Slate, a veteran of the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater, had a bit of a trial by fire at “S.N.L.” when she accidentally used an obscene word during the first episode of the 2009 season. But after settling in at the show, Ms. Slate went on to portray quirky characters like the television pitchwoman Tina-Tina Chaneuse. She also appears in the HBO comedy “Bored to Death,” and recently had a hit viral video with “Marcel the Shell With Shoes On,” a stop-motion animated short that she wrote with its director, Dean Fleischer-Camp, and for which she provided the voice of the title character.

Read more here:
http://artsbeat.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/09/07/saturday-night-live-cast-adds-four-and-loses-one-more/
===================

This is interesting, because essentially Nasim and Abby get the blessing, and Vanessa Bayer replaces Jenny. With females getting let go two years in a row now, Vanessa has to hit the ground running.

This is sad because Bobby worked hard to support Jenny and did a great job supporting her commercials. It's sad that she didn't make the cut, but I'm sure Bobby is going to do a good job keeping that relationship open enough for the future.

Enjoy!

Who has been anchor of Weekend Update the longest?

Seth Meyers is starting his 5th season (so he's only had 4 seasons), but this will be only his 2nd full season as the sole anchor (a little longer than that, cuz Amy Poehler left mid season).

Amy Poehler was co-anchor for 5 seasons. Horatio Sanz co-anchored with Amy after Tina and before Seth for 1 season (05-06). Tina Fey was co-anchor for 6 seasons. Jimmy Fallon was co-anchor for 4 seasons. Colin Quinn was the sole anchor for 3 seasons (those were terrible). Norm MacDonald was the sole anchor for 4 seasons. Kevin Nealon for 3 years. Dennis Miller for 6 years (85-91). Christopher Guest for 1 year (84-85). Brad Hall was 2 years (82-84). Mary Gross and Brian Doyle-Murray co-anchored for 1 year (81-82). Jane Curtain mostly co-anchored for 4 years (76-80). Bill Murray co-anchored for 2 years (78-80). Dan Aykroyd co-anchored for 1 year (77-78). Chevy Chase anchored for 2 years (75-76).

Jane Curtain is a complicated story. She took over for Chevy Chase when he left in 76. Then in the next season (77-78), she co-anchored with Dan Aykroyd. Then they switched from Dan to Bill Murray and Jane co-anchored with Bill. So Jane has 4 years in her, but 1 wasn't a full year and 3 were as the co-anchor.

Kevin Nealon did the Subliminal News (check it out if you haven't).

So the answer to who anchored the longest (including as co-anchor):
1. Dennis Miller (6 seasons)
1. Tina Fey (6 seasons)
2. Amy Poehler (5 seasons)
3. Jane Curtain (4 seasons)
3. Norm MacDonald (4 seasons)
3. Jimmy Fallon (4 seasons)
3. Seth Meyers (4 seasons)
4. Kevin Nealon (3 seasons)
4. Colin Quinn (3 seasons)
5. Chevy Chase (2 seasons)
5. Bill Murray (2 seasons)
5. Brad Hall (2 seasons)
6. Dan Aykroyd (1 season)
6. Mary Gross (1 season)
6. Brian Doyle-Murray (1 season)
6. Christopher Guest (1 season)
6. Horatio Sanz (1 season)

Seth needs two more seasons (including this coming one) to tie with Dennis and Tina; 3 to win. Both Dennis and Tina were co-anchors in their first season, so each was only on SNL for 6 seasons. (So Seth and most of the others have the disadvantage that their first year on SNL was not as an anchor.)

Tina Fey was the only featured player to start as an anchor. (But she was the head writer at that point, so obviously Lorne was willing to take a chance with her.)

The only family members to both be anchors were Billy Murray and Brian Doyle-Murray (brothers). There have been other relatives as players, but not anchors... Belushis, Murrays, Aykroyds, Sweeneys, and Elliotts. They were all siblings except for Chris and Abby Elliott (father/daughter).

It's interesting that a lot of people thought that having Tina Fey and Jimmy Fallon co-anchor was a new idea, but that first started in 1977 (3rd season) with Jane Curtain and Dan Aykroyd and continued with Jane and Bill Murray.

So if we were going to rank them for how long they anchored only as sole anchors (not co-anchors), then we have:
1. Dennis Miller (6 seasons)
2. Norm MacDonald (4 seasons)
3. Kevin Nealon (3 seasons)
3. Colin Quinn (3 seasons)
4. Chevy Chase (2 seasons)
4. Brad Hall (2 seasons)
5. Jane Curtain (1 season)
5. Seth Meyers (1 season)
5. Christopher Guest (1 season)

So if we're going by that scale, Seth doesn't have a chance. There's no way he's got 5 more years in him. =^)

Bobby has three new co-workers on SNL

In the rounds that Lorne and Kristen Wiig have been making (and probably others), SNL did select three new performers to replace Will Forte. More of my opinions after the news story...

Three comedians — Paul Brittain, Vanessa Bayer, and Taran Killam — are rumored to join the cast of Saturday Night Live for its 36th season.

According to The Comic’s Comic, Brittain is a Chicago-based improviser and sketch comedian, Bayer is a Cleveland native who also performs throughout Chicago, and Killam has been on-air with MADtv and Nick Cannon’s Wild ‘N Out.

FYI: Yesterday, it was announced that Will Forte decided to call it quits after eight seasons on SNL.

Here are video clips of Bayer and Killam…

Vanessa Bayer: Blue Shield of California Commercial

Taran Killam: Scrubs Interns - Webisode 5

Article from:
http://justjared.buzznet.com/2010/08/27/saturday-night-lives-new-hires-revealed/#ixzz0xyPFgMrd
===============================

So Killam is more of a progressive step, since he's already been doing his comedy on TV for awhile (similar to how Amy Poehler and Kenan Thompson both were doing comedy on other shows before SNL). (I'm actually surprised Killam would take this gig, because he would probably be offered his own sitcom otherwise.) And Bayer and Brittain are more of the "finds." So we'll continue to check these three out and let you know what we think.

Brittain and Bayer were both confirmed through their improv organization, the Improv Olympics. Taran has not yet been confirmed through a direct source (SNL, The Groundlings, or Killam).

Bobby Moynihan only had 2 seasons with Will Forte

MacGruber has survived his last explosion.

Will Forte is keeping up the "Saturday Night Live" tradition of late-August departures by not coming back to the series for Season 36.

The New York Times reports that multiple sources say Forte won't be coming back and that the parting was amicable -- though at Forte's request. He wants to devote more time to other projects.

Hopefully those other projects will bring him more success than "MacGruber," the hilarious but certifiable bomb adaptation of one of his many "SNL" characters.

And there've been so many... the Falconer, Clancy T Bachleratt, absent-minded ESPN Classic commentator Greg Stink and, most recently, the monotone lothario Hamilton, whose inappropriate speeches at weddings, funerals and Q&As made for some of last season's funnier sketches.

UPDATE: NBC referred Zap2it to Forte's personal publicist who confirmed the news, saying, "After eight great seasons, Will has made the decision to move on from SNL to pursue new opportunities. He is eternally grateful to Lorne and all of the incredible people he worked with over the years."

So what do you think -- a good or bad move for Forte? And, most importantly, how much will you miss him?

From:
http://blog.zap2it.com/frominsidethebox/2010/08/saturday-night-live-will-forte-not-returning-next-season.html
==============

Okay, so I'm actually more surprised that this came at Will's request. Lorne will need to clean house soon (the average stay is approaching 8 years instead of 4-6), but he does need to line up new performers.

So Lorne is probably happy about this, because he has one less tough decision about who to ask to leave.

My personal opinion is that Will won't be terribly missed. He is a great straight man, MacGuber is amazingly and consistently funny on SNL, and his songs are hilarious (and I love his dancing coach), but his humor is usually too weird. He's bombed in two movies now that he's starred in.

So is this a good move for Will? Hard to say. He was great and valuable on SNL, but it's better to leave voluntarily for your career than to get kicked off. He picked a great time to go. So really it's just a question of what he has in mind and if it will succeed. If it's another movie... probably not.

A fan's thoughts on seeing Bobby Moynihan live

I saw [Bobby Moynihan] at the Del Close Marathon this year a bunch of times, with his UCB group and with Derrick Comedy and in some random appearances. Seeing him on snl tonight made me really miss getting to see him live in person. He is a super funny dude and is such a good inproviser. Seeing him live also confirmed that I need to start improv classes this year.

And I saw him tap dance with bottlecaps masking taped to his shoes.

Should Bobby Moynihan play John Belushi in a biopic?

Here's an author's take...

The big movie news today is that "The Hangover" director Todd Phillips is developing a biopic chronicling the too-short life of comedian and actor John Belushi. The portly "Saturday Night Live" vet passed away in 1982, at the age of 33, the victim of a drug overdose. In spite of his abbreviated career, Belushi held starring roles in what many consider to be two of the greatest comedies in the history of film: "Blues Brothers" and "Animal House."

Bobby Moynihan
If there's any name on this list that you're confused about, it's Bobby Moynihan. Who is this guy? He's a current cast member on "Saturday Night Live" who bears no small resemblance to Belushi. He's got virtually no big screen experience and no starring roles. To go from contributing to a weekly sketch comedy show to leading a blockbuster biopic... that's a hard one to swallow. He's hard not to at least consider though, given his resemblance to the subject.

Read about the author's other candidates here:
http://moviesblog.mtv.com/2010/08/12/john-belushi-biopic-coming-from-todd-phillips-so-mtv-does-a-little-armchair-casting/

What about Jim Belushi? Would that be too difficult for John's brother to do it?

Is Bobby Moynihan coming back to Saturday Night Live?

I think it would be crazy for him not to be invited back, but here's a wish list from Faith, and Bobby's not on the list...

The people on the cast of SNL are I think almost the same. Andy's staying. I think a black female will be introduced.

- Abby Elliott

- Bill Hader

- Seth Meyers

- Nasim Pedrad

- Andy Samberg

- Jason Sudeikis

- Kenan Thompson

Featuring

- New Cast Member to Play Obama

- New White Guy

- New Female Cast Member

===================

So Kristen already said she'd come back, and we know Bobby wouldn't miss it. Plus I don't know why Fred would leave. Will Forte is also missing from this list. Basically, my best guess is that Fred, Will, or Kenan would be the next to go. But with Kenan as the only black member, Fred doing most all the cold openings, Will playing a lot of the straight guy and every-man characters, and the fact that none of them have other options to go to, it might be awhile longer before they leave. Plus it doesn't look like Lorne has a bunch of hot shot young actors to bring in and mix it up, like he did in 2005 with Kristen, Andy, Jason, and Bill (which would mean more of a reason to phase out the older actors).

Bobby Moynihan's IMDB professional resume

It's very interesting to look at entertainers' resumes like this, because obviously they don't work like every other industry. It doesn't really speak to accomplishments in jobs. Instead it just lists off the little projects they did. There's got to be a better way to sell an actor/writer than to just list off what they did.

Until then...

THOUGHTS

I didn't know Bobby was in so much theater! And, um, Bobby played Jesus. =^O

I think they (Bobby and his manager, Naomi Odenkirk) should be a little more specific. Their "Comedy" category should be "Live Comedy." Because it almost implies his TV and film work, which obviously isn't in that list. And "Video" should be "Music Videos" because he's done a ton of Web and TV videos and shorts that aren't in that list.

Why did they include "Print" as a category? I don't get that one. Is someone going to look at his resume and be like, "But can he model?" Maybe, I guess. If that's what he's going for, it should probably be clearer, like labeled "Modeling for Print," and then he should get a few more examples listed on his resume. He can probably also include shoots he did for magazine interviews (actually, I don't think he's done any of those yet).

"Internet" should probably be "Internet Videos," just so Internet noobs in the Entertainment industry won't think it's like websites he wrote for or something.

Also, it's interesting how they picked what's the most important roles to list first in each category. They probably take into account how successful that piece was and how big his role was in that piece. It's obviously not listed in chronological or alphabetical order (which is fine, because you can just find that on IMDB anyway).

I think it's interesting how they list out SNL and each SNL special he's been in. A little unnecessary but it drives his contribution to the show home a little more clearly (although I almost wish they itemized out his most famous characters and skits).

Enjoy!

Bobby Moynihan - His early years

This is an old one, but it's good.

Live from New York - it’s Bobby Moynihan!

Whatever you do, don’t call Bobby Moynihan’s gig as [a] “Saturday Night Live” cast member an overnight success story.

It’s been a long journey for the 31-year-old Eastchester native, one that began on the Eastchester High School stage, continued at the University of Connecticut and gained momentum through Manhattan’s Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre.

“It’s so funny, people are like, ‘You got this big break out of nowhere,’”
Moynihan said in his office, sandwiched between the 30 Rockefeller Plaza rooms belonging to veteran player Darrell Hammond and “SNL” head writer Seth Meyers.
“I’ve been doing comedy for eight years. I’ve been trying really, really hard to get here.”
Moynihan’s mother, Julie, said her son had played Santa Claus in a class show when he was in third grade but didn’t consider acting as a potential career path until he was older.

“In the beginning, it was just to have fun and be with his friends,” she said.

In 1990, Moynihan auditioned for the first time to be in an Eastchester Youth Council summer theater production. He was cast as the Scarecrow in “The Wizard of Oz,” the first of many shows he’d do with EYC.

Bunny Rappaport and her daughter, Susan, have served as producer and director, respectively, for all 25 EYC shows. They saw the funny faces he makes in Studio 8H years earlier, when he played Tevye in “Fiddler on the Roof,” Alfred Doolittle in “My Fair Lady” and a cross-dressing gangster in “Kiss Me, Kate.”

“I can’t think of anything more gratifying to watch a young boy who started (acting regularly) in seventh grade mature into what we knew he had in him,” Bunny Rappaport said. “I always felt that he had that comic background.”

During the school year, Moynihan performed with the Eastchester Players’ Club. His two favorite EHS roles were dramatic ones: Randle P. McMurphy, the lead in “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest,” and Judas in “Godspell,” which required him to whirl around the stage in rollerblades.

Moynihan worked most of his teenage years as a lifeguard at Eastchester’s Lake Isle Park.

“Every time it rained, we would just grab garbage bags, poke two armholes and a head hole, and go out to the golf course and slide down the golf course in the pouring rain,” he said.

After studying acting at the University of Connecticut, Bobby trained, toured and taught with the UCB Theatre - cofounded by “SNL’s” Amy Poehler - and became a standout performer with several house teams, most recently with The Stepfathers.

“I started UCB a couple months before Amy got ‘SNL,’ and I started ‘SNL’ six episodes before she finished,” he said. “She created the theater that I started at, and you just look at her and you’re just like, ‘This is amazing.’ I owe a lot to her.”

After graduating from UConn, TV beckoned- slowly. His shoulder appeared on the short-lived Alan Arkin vehicle “100 Centre Street,” then Moynihan got some face time (but no lines) on an episode of “Law & Order.” His resume reel picked up when he voiced the character of Rabbit on the Fuse animated comedy “Empire Square,” showed up repeatedly for bits on “Late Night with Conan O’Brien” and hammed it up in ESPN commercials.

The Internet helped as well. He made a cameo in a comedy viral video, “Bro Rape,” which has more than 5.5 million views on YouTube. And [summer 2008] he appeared in the Seth Meyers-directed comedy Web-series “The Line,” featuring “SNL” cast members Bill Hader and Jason Sudeikis.

Moynihan spent two years prepping for his first - unsuccessful - “SNL” audition last year in front of series creator Lorne Michaels, Meyers and casting agents. Those results left Moynihan “devastated,” he said, but the free time allowed him to act in two movies due next year.

Soon after wrapping production on “When in Rome” - he plays the best friend of Josh Duhamel’s character - Moynihan got another shot at “SNL.” He had only four days to write all new material for “the most important six minutes of your life.”

“I freaked out,” he says. “I didn’t sleep for three days.”
He developed bits for his impressions of Nathan Lane, Jack Black and “Snagglepuss at a swingers’ bar.”

With an Aug. 13 phone call, Michaels told Moynihan he had made the cut. He said he spent much of the afternoon in disbelief sitting on a park bench near Eastchester Town Hall.

What was his mother’s reaction? “Just shock, disbelief, happiness,” Julie Moynihan said. “All the emotions you would feel when you want your child to have their dream.”

In his “SNL” debut, Moynihan was grateful to lead a full-length sketch that featured Poehler and centered on the flamboyant Mark Payne, a pepper-obsessed character inspired by his bartending work at Pizzeria Uno in Yonkers.

“I honestly think the only reason it got on was because Michael Phelps was hosting,” he said, adding that athletes are not expected to carry sketches the way trained actors do.
Moynihan’s mother, who still lives and works in Eastchester, watched the debut with close friends and family.

“We just realized the dream when we heard his name announced,” she said. “I think everybody in the area of Huntley must have heard us.”

As the credits rolled for that episode, a jumping Tina Fey - whose Sarah Palin impersonation returned a bright spotlight to “SNL” - pointed at Moynihan with both hands. Since then, Moynihan has done sketches with Anne Hathaway, Anna Faris, James Franco, Josh Brolin, Jon Hamm, Bill Murray, Maya Rudolph, and Palin herself.

“‘I don’t want it to end.’ I already am like, ‘I wish we had 50 episodes,’” he said. “It’s the greatest. I could not be happier.”

Bobby Moynihan - His characters part 2

“I’ve been on the show for two years now and I’ve been such a fan of it all my life and you have so many of these moments where you just look up and you hear the band playing the music and you’re just like, ‘I’m here. I can’t believe it.’”

Bobby Moynihan - His characters part 1

“If my sketch doesn’t get on or if I get cut… you know, the Steve Martin episode was on my birthday and I’d been thinking about it for months. Like, what are the chances of my birthday falling on a Saturday and Steve Martin hosting? This is the greatest gift I’ve ever gotten in my entire life… and I got completely shut out of the live show— I was in one of the digital shorts. And you’re upset and devastated but it’s just that thing of: Don’t complain, don’t hide and don’t let anybody know that you’re upset because it doesn’t matter. It’s about the show, it’s not about you. If you pout and complain, you’re going to look like an asshole. I’m still a nerd. If I’m not in the show I go down the studio and just watch because I feel so lucky I’m even able to be in the building.”

More about the Lost skit that Bobby Moynihan mentioned

This was one of the questions Seth Meyers answered during a SportsNation chat.

Amy (Ireland)
I did an interview with Bobby Moynihan and he mentioned that you wrote a Lost sketch that was cut from the finale. (a) How on earth was that cut?! (b) Can you spill any details about the sketch itself?

Seth Meyers (1:56 PM)
Alec Baldwin played a guy who was on the flight but had kept to himself since the crash because he didn't like how no one ever answered any questions. It was fairly cut.

Seth Meyers (1:56 PM)
But thank you for your support!

Cowboy Hiphop is not an SNL skit (Bobby Moynihan mentioned)

Wait, we don't recognize anyone from the "SNL" cast -- Fred Amisen, Abby Elliot, Will Forte, Bill Hader, Bobby Moynihan, Kristen Wiig, Jason Sudeikis -- in this infomercial about a new dance craze called Cowboy Hip Hop.

From:

=============

We're posting this just cuz Bobby Moynihan's name was used for this joke. Think about it... Kenan, Andy, Jenny, Seth, and Nasim weren't listed here, and previous SNL players weren't listed. So this is just a showing of the perception that Bobby Moynihan is a legitimate member and mainstay on SNL. Now if Lorne will just promote him to main cast (and not featured player) this next year. I assume Lorne will promote Abby and Bobby (and maybe Nasim; I think Jenny is the most likely to be featured for another year, and possibly Nasim as well).

Enjoy!
